When to Schedule Your Maternity Photos

If you’ve ever planned photos with me before, you know I care just as much about how something feels as how it looks.

Maternity sessions are no different. Timing isn’t about rules or “perfect weeks.” It’s about choosing a moment when your body still feels supportive and present.

For most parents, that moment falls between 28 and 32 weeks.

The Maternity Session Sweet Spot: 28–32 Weeks

I typically recommend scheduling your session somewhere between 28-32 weeks. By this point in pregnancy, your belly is clearly visible, and many parents are still able to move comfortably. This makes it easier to focus on the experience rather than managing discomfort.

When you feel at ease, you’re more present. That presence shows up in photos that feel relaxed, natural, and confident.

Timing is just one piece of the puzzle. If you want help planning a session that feels true to you, check out these tips on planning a beautiful, meaningful maternity session in Vermont.

Feeling Like Yourself Matters

The most meaningful maternity photos don’t come from perfect posing or elaborate setups. They come from small, natural moments. A hand resting on your belly. A pause to take a breath. A quiet smile that happens without direction.

When you feel comfortable in your body, those moments come easily.

This is especially true for Vermont maternity sessions that involve being outdoors. Walking a short trail, standing in a field at golden hour, or simply being in fresh air for a while all feel more fun when you’re physically up for it!

Consider Booking Your Maternity Session Early

Every pregnancy is different, but many parents find that waiting until the final weeks adds unnecessary pressure.

Your energy dips. Swelling increases. Movement takes more intention. Scheduling your maternity session early (in the third or even in the second trimester) gives you more flexibility and more grace, both with your body and with the unpredictable nature of pregnancy.

If you’re carrying multiples, have a higher-risk pregnancy, or want to do something more active in your maternity session, leaning toward the earlier end of this window can be a really supportive choice.

Planning Ahead Creates Breathing Room

I recommend reaching out during your first or early second trimester so we can talk through your vision and plan a session that fits you. This includes choosing a time of day when you feel your best, a location you love, and any meaningful details you want to include.

Booking early also means your session doesn’t get lost in the swirl of third-trimester appointments and to-do lists.

This Season Is Worth Remembering

You don’t need to wait until everything feels finished or fully formed. The crib doesn’t have to be set up. The nursery doesn’t need to be fully decorated. This season of growing and preparing for new life, wherever you’re at with it, is already full of beautiful anticipation and hope.

Years from now, these photos won’t just show how you looked. They will remind you how it felt to slow down, to imagine what was coming, and to exist in that waiting space.

That’s why 28–32 weeks is often the moment parents are most grateful they captured.

I’d love to document your pregnancy in a way that feels honest, calm, and true to you.
