Pregnancy is a wild, beautiful adventure! Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, a maternity session is a chance to pause and celebrate what your body is doing and the family you’re growing.
If you’re dreaming of a Vermont maternity photo session, you’re in luck — we have some of the most stunning backdrops in the country. From mountain views and rolling fields to cozy small towns and quiet forest trails, Vermont is a perfect place to capture this special season. Here are a few of my favorite tips to help you plan a session that feels beautiful, comfortable, and full of meaning.

Why Do a Maternity Session in Vermont?
Because this season deserves to be celebrated! Pregnancy is fleeting and powerful — a transformation that’s emotional and physical. Maternity photos are about honoring that journey: the anticipation, the strength, and the love that fills these final weeks before baby arrives.
Years from now, when the newborn days feel like a blur, you’ll look back at these photos and remember exactly how it felt to be here — waiting, dreaming, and growing your family
When to Schedule Your Vermont Maternity Shoot
For most mamas-to-be, the ideal time for maternity photos is between 30 and 36 weeks. By then, your bump is showing — but you’re not too close to your due date.
That said, every pregnancy is different. Listen to your body, your comfort level, and your energy. The goal is to choose a time when you feel like yourself and can move around comfortably.
If you’re expecting twins or have a higher-risk pregnancy, you might schedule a little earlier — around 28–32 weeks. The most important thing is that you feel good and excited for your session.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Shoot
Your outfit sets the tone for your maternity session, and it’s a great way to reflect your personal style (and the season).
Form-fitting clothes photograph beautifully — they highlight your incredible bump — but flowy pieces can be lovely, too. A soft knit dress, a long gown that moves in the breeze, or a simple button-down left open over your belly are timeless choices.
There are so many maternity clothing options out there, from elevated basics to dreamy dresses. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. You don’t need to buy a fancy new dress for photos if you don’t want to (or it’s not in the budget). Use what you have, borrow from a friend, thrift, or rent something!
And if you’re including your partner or kids, coordinate outfits in complementary tones rather than matching exactly — it creates a natural, cohesive look.
Including Your Partner and Family
A maternity session isn’t just about the bump — it’s about connection.
With partners, I love capturing the small, in-between moments: a hand resting on your belly, a laugh, a forehead kiss. These are the images that tell the story of anticipation and love.
If you have older children, having them in photos is a beautiful way to celebrate this particular moment before your family grows. Let them snuggle close, hold the ultrasound photo, or help you pick flowers during the shoot.
(Pro tip: print one of your favorite maternity photos with your older child and gift it “from the baby” when the little one arrives!)
And, of course, your pets are part of your family and they are welcome to come as well!

Vermont Maternity Shoot Locations
You can make your maternity session as cozy or adventurous as you want — Vermont offers the best of both worlds.
- In nature: think flower fields, forest trails, or mountaintop overlooks. There is no shortage of beautiful nature here!
- At home: capture quiet, intimate moments — curled up on the couch, barefoot in the nursery, or standing by a window as soft morning light fills the room.
- In town: If you love a lifestyle feel, we can stroll through your favorite neighborhood or stop by your go-to café.
No matter where we go, I love mixing a few backdrops so your gallery feels layered and alive.

Adding Meaningful Details to Your Maternity Photos
It’s often the little things that make maternity photos so personal:
- An ultrasound image
- Tiny baby shoes
- A child- or baby-sized version of something that reflects your hobbies, like tiny snow boots, a baby Carhartt hat, or a miniature fishing rod
- A onesie
- A family heirloom blanket
- A favorite childhood book
- Flowers that tie into your baby shower or nursery
You could even bring a letter you’ve written to your baby — something about what you’re excited for or the promises you’re making as a parent. Reading or holding it during your session adds such genuine emotion to your photos

Feeling Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Almost every expecting parent says, “I feel awkward in photos” — and that’s completely okay. My sessions are relaxed and guided. There’s no stiff posing or pressure. We’ll walk, talk, and let moments unfold naturally.
If you’re nervous, scheduling your session for the time of day when you feel your best (morning or golden hour) helps, too.
Some mamas also love getting their hair and makeup done — not because they need it, but as a way to slow down and feel pampered. Go for soft, timeless styles that feel like you.

Whether we’re wandering through golden fields or cozied up at home, my goal is to create Vermont maternity photos that feel real — honest, emotional, and true to your story.
If you’re dreaming up your maternity session, I’d love to help you plan something that feels like you.
