If you’re already thinking about a winter elopement, you don’t need convincing about the beauty of this season. And chances are, you’re also thinking about winter activities you already love — the kind that feel like you. Built into your elopement day, those moments can make the experience feel deeply personal and unforgettable.

Skiing or Snowboarding Together
Skiing and snowboarding are a huge part of winter life for many couples and great activities to add to your elopement day.
Maybe you start the day with a few early runs. Maybe you exchange vows during a quiet moment at the top of the mountain, then slide into married life together.
Not every photographer is prepared to capture an elopement while skiing down a mountain themselves, so please be sure to check if this is something you’d like photographed. A few of my favorite spots are Killington, Stowe, or skiing Vermont’s backcountry.

Sledding
There’s something freeing about doing something a little silly on a day that can sometimes feel heavy with expectations. It brings out real laughter and joy.
If you want your elopement to feel light, playful, and relaxed, sledding is one of the easiest ways to get there.

Ice Skating
Ice skating is winter’s version of dancing. You’re close. You’re moving together. It’s romantic and beautiful…even if you stumble a few times.
Whether it’s a softly lit rink at night or a quiet, secluded pond, ice skating is a simple way to infuse your elopement day with winter magic.

Exploring or Hiking in the Snow
Some of the best moments happen when little is planned.
Crunching through freshly fallen snow. A meandering hike. Tossing snowballs. Admiring the sparkling snow on the treetops for a few minutes.
Giving yourselves time to be outside together without a tight agenda can become one of the most meaningful parts of the day.

Warming Up by a Fire
Once you’ve had your fill of winter’s frosty adventures, it’s time to warm up.
A fire gives you a natural place to pause, sit close, and reconnect. Whether it’s outside under the stars or inside a cozy cabin, it’s a moment to slow down together.
This can be where you read vows, share a drink, have your first dance, or simply hang out and reflect.

A Note on Clothing
Many couples choose to wear warm layers or a glam snowsuit for activities, then change into something more traditional for portraits and vows. Ultimately, it’s up to you and what you feel comfortable in!
Letting Winter Lead
A winter elopement built around things that already feel familiar — skiing, skating, being outside, warming up together — it tends to unfold more naturally.
If you’re still picturing what a winter elopement could look like, my How to Plan a Winter Elopement in Vermont post goes deeper into timing, locations, and winter considerations. It’s a helpful place to start if you want the day to feel calm rather than rushed.
