Nick + Annie’s Woodstock, Vermont Engagement Hike

A couple standing on a hilltop in Pomfret, Vermont popping a bottle of champagne during their engagement session.

There are certain stories that feel extra special to photograph …

Nick is my cousin, and I’ve had a front-row seat to watching his and Annie’s story unfold since they were kids. Nick has been crushing on Annie since third grade. She was his first girlfriend — and he her first boyfriend. Life took them in different directions after college, but they found their way back to each other and more in love than ever.

Now, they’re planning a wedding, a lifetime in the making!

WOODSTOCK, VERMONT: A FAMILIAR BACKDROP

Woodstock has always been a meaningful place for Nick; his family has gathered there since he was little. Plus, Woodstock is where he and Annie escape to when they need a break from their home in NYC.

So it only felt right to capture their engagement session in this charming Vermont town, filled with so many memories.

A ROMANTIC HIKE IN POMFRET, VERMONT

We started our session with a quiet walk through the woods in Pomfret, just outside of Woodstock. The trail wound between old stone walls and wide maple trees, while the summer light filtered softly through the leaves.

Nick and Annie laughed and moved easily together, with the kind of effortless comfort that comes from a lifetime of knowing someone.

When we reached the top of the hill, they popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate — and the golden light made the bubbles dance!

On our way back down, we couldn’t help stopping along a quiet dirt road for a few more portraits filled with laughter, joy, and golden light.

This session had everything I love: a couple wildly in love, a little adventure, and a gorgeous backdrop.

WHY HIKING IS PERFECT FOR A VERMONT ENGAGEMENT SESSION

Hiking (or even just wandering a trail) gives you something to do — which makes the whole experience of being photographed feel more relaxed, natural and fun. You can move, laugh, stop for a view, and forget about the camera for a while. It’s the best way to let your real connection shine through.

And the best part? Every season in Vermont has its own kind of magic.

  • Spring brings soft greens and blooming wildflowers
  • Summer means long golden evenings like this one
  • Fall turns the hills into a blaze of color
  • Winter is quiet and cozy

No matter when you plan your session, there’s always something beautiful waiting to be discovered in the Green Mountains.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR HIKING ENGAGEMENT SESSION

If you’re planning something similar, my advice is simple: comfort first. Choose clothes you can move easily in and that make you feel like you. Neutral or earth tones photograph beautifully against Vermont’s natural landscapes (e.g. creams, sage, rust, denim, and soft patterns).

And don’t be afraid to bring layers like a cozy sweater or jacket. These items add texture and warmth to your photos (and keep you comfortable when a mountain breeze rolls in).

If you want something dressier, pack a small bag with a change of clothes or shoes — I’m game to help with a quick trail-side outfit swap!

PLANNING YOUR DREAM VERMONT ENGAGEMENT SESSION

I’m grateful to Nick and Annie for inviting me to be part of their story! Photographing couples in love — in a place they love — is always a special moment.

If you’re planning your own engagement session in Vermont, I’d love to help. Whether you’re hoping for a relaxed hike, a cozy in-town stroll, or a full mountain adventure — I’d love to connect to make it a memorable experience.
