Why the Best Place for your Family Session is in Your Home

When thinking about getting family photos taken, what do you picture? Most people think about standing in a pretty field and smiling at the camera. But here’s why the your next family session should be in your own home.

There’s something really special about photographing a family in their own space.

Your home holds your real life—your rhythms, your routines, the little details that make your family unique.

As a Vermont family photographer, I’ve found that in-home family sessions create some of the most meaningful, connected images. Here’s why.

In-Home Family Sessions Tell Your Real Story

In-home family sessions aren’t about creating something new. They’re about documenting the beauty and connection already present in your life.

Your child playing amongst his favorite toys scattered across the floor.
Your dog waiting by the door for a walk.
Kids playing on the swing set they always gravitate toward after dinner.
The muffin recipe you make every Sunday morning for your family.

These are the things that shape your life right now, and they deserve to be remembered!

Everyone Feels More Relaxed

Let’s be honest—getting your photo taken often feels a little stressful. But being at home, in a space that feels familiar, can soften that.

Plus, your kids can kick off their shoes, grab their favorite toy or lovey, and settle in without needing to “perform.” They can move freely, take breaks, and even help guide what we do.

When everyone feels more relaxed, the photos reflect it.

Staying Home Has Practical Benefits, Too

There’s something to be said for the ease of being at home. Think: easy access to snacks, a bathroom, diapers/wipes, an outfit swap, and anything else that helps you feel comfortable.

You don’t have to pack a bag or worry about forgetting something important.

That confidence alone can make a big difference in how the session feels!

Remembering Your Home as it is Today

As a mom to a young child myself, I know how these days can feel like they stretch on forever (in the best and hardest ways).

But I’m also reminded that one day, our homes will look different.

The toys will be gone.
The routines will shift.
The high chair or kitchen learning tower will be tucked away in a closet.

And if your kids are older, you already know how quickly seasons change, how fast they move through phases, interests, and versions of themselves.

This version of your life and home are worth remembering.
